“There’s the sunglasses-on, head-down, fingers-up, and there’s the chin-skyward, teeth-flashing, arms-flailing. They’re the two looks. And if you’re in a band, or plan to be any time soon, you should be aware that each of these onstage personas on choice has to be executed to its extreme. And, while the latter is far more difficult to achieve than the XX Teens’ option, it is infinitely more rewarding for both you and your audience.

Montreal’s Dandi Wind is the breathing proof, making Love Foxxx seem like a lazy bore. The live shows that accompany her electro trash see a war-painted Dandi, crow-barred into a fluorescent leotard, crowd-diving and causing general mayhem. So it’s perhaps no surprise that the black paint-flinging Horrors chose her (and Dandi Wind beat-maker Szam) to tour Europe with them this year, following a notoriously destructive SXSW set in March. Along with the release of their UK debut, ‘Concrete Igloo’, it’s been quite a 12 months the most theatrical live performer of 2007.

Hello Dandi, how are you?
“Today I’m feeling OK- but all yesterday I had food poisoning and was puking all over the place. I fainted on the floor and hit my spine and the back of my head so I’m pretty weak. Last week I was in Porta Vallarta, Mexican paradise. It was warm and tropical- I had an amazing time and actually got a tan. We spent a lot of time in the Jungle with the Iguanas.”
And where are you now?
“Right now I’m in Vancouver – the most expensive city (other than NYC in North America). It rains here all the time so I don’t know why
everyone wants to live here.”
Highlights of the year, let’s start with The Horrors tour‚”
“Yeah I love The Horrors a lot – they are super nice dudes and so fun to play with. The tour was a highlight for us because we got to see a lot of cities we always wanted to see and we were treated very well by the promoters.”
Not like at SXSW then, what exactly happened there?
“Oh…Well it was pretty packed because it was the first time we’d played in America (since it’s hard for Canadians to get US visas) and so a lot of people were there to check us out. Some girl had decorated the place with pi√±atas and balloons- they were all around the stage and soon they were torn to bits and flying through the air. I had a large umbilical cord that I was whipping in circles at the front of the stage – that’s something I do quite regularly at shows- but because the stage was so small I hit a few people in the face. You know I really didn’t mean to hit anyone but I guess I couldn’t avoid it. Peaches got pretty upset- she was in the front row. At the end of the show the venue made me pay 80 bucks for the microphone (which I somehow destroyed) and then the pi√±ata girl tried to make me pay for all the pi√±atas that got broken. Isn’t that what they’re for?”
Has [new album] ‘Yolk Of The Golden Egg’ been released in the US yet. And when can we expect it over here?
“No it’s not out anywhere yet. We decided to go over the whole album again and re-do some songs- take some out and write some new ones. It should come out everywhere by spring 2008.”
How does it differ from ‘Concrete Igloo’?
“Well I guess it’s more mature. The songs are longer, slower and more melodic. The lyrics are personal and true. We are very proud of it and can’t wait till it’s all finished and everyone can hear it.”
We’ve just called you ‘the most theatrical live performer of 2007’.
What can people expect from your shows?
“You can expect to see the most high energy live show you’ve ever seen, guaranteed.”
What is the Dandi Wind dream?
“I guess our dream would really be to have been born about 25 years earlier. I dream about that all the time.”
And the plans for the New Year?
“2008 we’ve been invited to play Thailand and China and Australia.
Hopefully we’ll also get to go to Japan and a few more European tours. ‘Yolk’ will come out and a series EPs will also be released.”
How will you be spending Christmas?
“I don’t really know – Last year Szam and I just ate Kraft dinner and watched Driver 23/Atlas Moth – It was kind of depressing.”
When can the people of Britain next expect to see Dandi Wind?
“Soon I hope. Early 2008. Check my Myspace page for dates.”
