The wait for MIA’s return has felt like an age, but considering she planned to quit music shortly after the release of 2007’s ‘Kala’ we should just be thankful that she’s bothered with a third album at all. The wait for MIA’s return has felt like an age, but considering she planned to quit music shortly after the release of 2007’s ‘Kala’ we should just be thankful that she’s bothered with a third album at all. Her long-awaited come back single is ‘Born Free’, and its video especially is going to fuck a lot of people off.

Directed by Romain Gavras, the 9-minute film makes Chris Cunningham look like Walt Disney by showing, with no amount of inaccuracy, just how horrific man can be. It’s brilliantly executed though, and could have only been made by a handful of artists existing in our current climate of fear.

As troops brutally torment a minority (in this case redheads), plenty of people will no doubt accuse MIA of using controversy as a marketing tool, and maybe she is. Or maybe she’s making an very powerful statement indeed. Either way, it’s good to have back an artist who is this culturally aware.
