It seems that we are well and truly into the ‘re-issue’ season, with Trojan Records and Nirvana commemorative boxsets announced this week. And now, joining them, are The Smiths. What makes ‘The Smiths Complete’ project a little different is that it’s been conducted by one of the band themselves, guitarist Johnny Marr.

With engineer Frank Arkwright, Marr has remaster the band’s four studio albums (‘The Smiths’ [1984], ‘Meat Is Murder’ [1985], ‘The Queen Is Dead’ [1986] and ‘Strangeways, Here We Come’ [1987]),  their sole live album ‘Rank’ [1988] and firm fan favourite compilations ‘Hatful Of Hollow’ [1984], ‘The World Won’t Listen’ [1987] and ‘Louder Than Bombs’ [1987].

There’s a strong argument that albums as good as these should be left well alone, but hey, at least the man doing the fiddling wrote the songs in the first place.

Of the project, Marr posted on his website: “I’m very happy that the remastered versions of The Smiths albums are finally coming out. I wanted to get them sounding right and remove any processing so that they now sound as they did when they were originally made. I’m pleased with the results.”

All of the above will be made available on CD and Vinyl from September 26 2011.
