At a press conference to announce his debut solo album, Noel Gallagher broke his silence regarding the split of Oasis this morning [July 7 2011].

Younger brother Liam has been all to happy to voice his versions of events that lead to the split of the band, but Noel has remained tight-lipped on the subject until now.

At the Electric Cinema, Notting Hill, where Gallagher announced that his debut solo album will be called ‘Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Bird’ and released on October 17 2011, it took five polite questions before one reported (from the BBC) plucked up the courage to ask what had finally caused Oasis to call it day.

Noel then spoke candidly and uninterrupted for close to ten minutes, admitting that there were a number of personal issues between himself and Liam but a key factor was that his little brother wanted to advertise his clothing label, Pretty Green, in Oasis’ tour programmes. Noel quashed the idea before finally asking a nagging Liam how much he was willing to pay to advertise. “He couldn’t get his head around that,” said Noel, before recounting how an argument erupted that ended with Liam throwing a plum at him, before he stormed out of the room and back in again swinging a guitar around in an aggressive manner. “It nearly too my face off,” said Noel.

Gallagher senior ended up smashing up the guitar (“It was on the floor, so I put it out of its misery”), sitting in the car park for five minutes before deciding, “I can’t deal with this anymore.” And that was that. Oasis were dead, which is something that Noel said he regrets. “If I could have my time again I would have finished that tour because we only had two shows left,” he said. “I would have played them and then we could have all gone away and talked about it, and maybe Oasis wouldn’t have split up.”

‘Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ will be followed next year by Noel’s second, as yet untitled, album, which he has already completed, and spent this morning describing as “As far out as I’ve ever been.”
