Even though it’s been long announced that Lou Reed and Metallica have been in the studio working on an album together, the whole thing still seems quite unbelievable. It’s definitely NOT a hoax though, with a release date for ‘Lulu’ now announced.

The teaming up of The Velvet Underground legend and metal’s most successful band in history was all Reed’s idea, sparked by the pair playing Velvet tracks ‘Sweet Jane’ and ‘White Light/White Heat’ together at the 25th anniversary Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame concerts in New York City in October 2009. Reed had the idea to release an album of old, forgotten material, re-imagined with the band, but he soon changed his mind.

Reed had recently written a series of songs for American avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson and German theater group the Berliner Ensemble’s production of the Lulu Plays, and he wanted them recorded. The songs are inspired by German expressionist Frank Wedekind’s early 20th century plays Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box, and were a rewrite of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, which emerged as a graphic novel on Fantagraphics Press.

Needless to say that Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett most probably has a fair point when he says: “It’s definitely not a Metallica album, or a Lou Reed album. It’s something else. It’s a new animal, a hybrid.”

‘Lulu’ is out 31 October 2011, via Vertigo Records.
