Baltimore based electronic magician Benny Boeldt struck gold on his last album, ‘Lesser Known’. His ’80s synth pop soundscapes were hooktastic whilst still looking to break new territory as it also marked Boeldt’s vocal debut, which caused for some euphoric sing-alongs. It appears that his delivery can’t have met his high standards though, as all vocals have been deemed surplus to requirement on ‘Weird Work’, which is constructed upon an 8-bit pulse that can be both challenging and rewarding (see tracks like ‘Alone’, which sounds like a futuristic transmission from a parallel planet). There are recurring surprises here too, yet the intriguing course that ‘Weird Work’ sometimes takes is never enough to mask what is truly missing – the most important and effective instrument of them all, Benny Boeldt’s voice.
