Hearts And Unicorns
words by Danny Canter
Giant Drag are a worrying duo! Such an extensive fascination of knives, as theirs, is surely not healthy. The menace in the eyes of front woman, Annie, as she brandishes a blade on the cover of ‘Hearts And Unicorns’, questions a typo at the print house. Shouldn’t that be ‘Hearts Of Unicorns’?
But comfortably defending the cuddly, juxtaposed title, with one fist severed off, is the bands sultry fuzz toned rock. Track titles such as ‘Kevin Is Gay’, ‘You Are Full Of Shit’, and the particularly tasteful, ‘You Fuck Like My Dad’, refuse to offend as serious threats once you hear just how radio pc this import actually is.
Giant Drag make a lot of noise for a guitar and drum two piece. Ultimately they seduce listeners to fall off their chairs, sink back into the carpet, spark a smoke and simply absorb the sound; the sound of hearts mending and love lives being erased. But one song weighs bodies down to the floorboards more than any other. ‘This Isn’t It’ is not a candid response to New York’s finest, but an honest departing shot to a loved one, delivered with a wink and a smile – “Love Love Love, this isn’t it. You wouldn’t know it, if it hit you”.
But whilst possessing such a paralyzing power, if you do start off horizontal to this one, you certainly won’t end up that way… after all, you can’t punch the air from down there, can you?
Unfortunately the remainder of ‘Hearts And Unicorns’ does become somewhat obsolete but if you have just been ankled by your love, give them this and don’t forget to smile.

Let the face furniture of San Fran disco-er Mike Relm fool you. Forget that he’s named his second album after his eyewear.
Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls
One of Vivian Girls is called Kickball Katy. She plays bass even more nonchalantly than your average Valium-scoffing four-stringer.

They're saying that punk's dead, y'know? Spiritually, if not physically.

Had ‘Enterprise Reversal’ been a five track EP of a release its toneless blahs from lead shouter Rivka Gillieron would have still been a struggle to sit through.
