London Town
words by Danny Canter
Kano sees Dizzee Rascal’s recent Lily Allen collaboration and raises him a Kate Nash laced ‘Me And My Mic’; clocks that Alex Turner is also on the Rascal’s latest album and so ships in Damon Albarn to appear on ‘London Town’; hears that Shy FX helped Diz gain a second Mercury nomination and so ups the ante with a mega-chart-hit-in-waiting, featuring Craig David. The UK hip hop gloves are off and we are all winners. The title of Kano’s follow up to 2005’s ‘Home Sweet Home’ says everything you need know about how confident the young rapper is right now. There are few words that panic label bosses more than that of ‘London’ appearing on the cover of an album. What about those who don’t live in London? Y’know, those millions of other British people with millions of record buying pounds? Why would they buy this? 679 would have thought as much for a heartbeat. Then they would have heard effortlessly smooth ‘This Is The Girl’ (featuring CD), the best ever almost-Gorillaz track ‘Feel Free’ and Kano’s very own ‘Touch The Sky’, cameoing Ms Nash, and realised this album could be called ‘Shit Sandwich’ and be the urban album of the year.
