Tournament of Hearts
words by John Simpson
In 2004, Constantines closed a gig in Texas with the entire room singing back the chorus to Lou Reed’s ‘Temporary Thing’ for over five minutes. Brows became sweaty when the promoters realized that this was going over Texas’ super strict curfew and they had no control over it. They could pull all the plugs they like but there really was no stopping Constantines. This is one of the reasons why Constantines are above the rules.
Seemingly impervious to influence, Constantines defy convention to make indie-rock that feels like it came out of nowhere. Settling somewhere between Fugazi, Neil Young and mid 90’s Pearl Jam, this third acclaimed Sub Pop release sounds like the starting pistol for Constantines’ mainstream recognition.

Mike Relm - Spectacles
Let the face furniture of San Fran disco-er Mike Relm fool you. Forget that he’s named his second album after his eyewear.
Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls
One of Vivian Girls is called Kickball Katy. She plays bass even more nonchalantly than your average Valium-scoffing four-stringer.
Plastic Passion - Contrived Imagery
They're saying that punk's dead, y'know? Spiritually, if not physically.
Wetdog - Enterprise Reversal
Had ‘Enterprise Reversal’ been a five track EP of a release its toneless blahs from lead shouter Rivka Gillieron would have still been a struggle to sit through.
