MTV Hard Rock Live
words by Laura Hughes

Back in the day when punk-pop bands didn’t have side-projects, “serious rock directions” and pre-teen celebrity girlfriends, Simple Plan made a record or two. Despite a series of high-profile tours, the band failed to make much of an impact with their three-chord, Mark Hoppus-championed tunes before baggy shorts were swapped for skinny ties and Britain was invaded by ‘The’ bands. Surprising then, that their latest attempt at swiping back some credibility involves an album full of live tracks, especially recorded for MTV in front of an audience of hysterical thirteen year-olds. Perma-grinned front man Pierre Bouvier does his best to keep the momentum going with onstage banter, and singles ‘Addicted’ and ‘I’d Do Anything’ are catchy enough, but with more three-part harmonies than your average McFly album, this is one for your little sister.

Mike Relm - Spectacles

Let the face furniture of San Fran disco-er Mike Relm fool you. Forget that he’s named his second album after his eyewear.

Vivian Girls

Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls

One of Vivian Girls is called Kickball Katy. She plays bass even more nonchalantly than your average Valium-scoffing four-stringer.

Plastic Passion

Plastic Passion - Contrived Imagery

They're saying that punk's dead, y'know? Spiritually, if not physically.

Wetdog

Wetdog - Enterprise Reversal

Had ‘Enterprise Reversal’ been a five track EP of a release its toneless blahs from lead shouter Rivka Gillieron would have still been a struggle to sit through.
