The Songs of Tim and Jeff Buckley
words by Emma Robinson

Another addition to the already saturated Buckley covers collection, ‘Dream Brother’ makes a courageous attempt to ignite a new interest in the works of Jeff and Tim Buckley. This compilation is not 13 like-for-like tracks. Most have been manipulated to bring an alternative sound, in a bid to showcase the versatility of some of the most popular bands of today (‘Lover, You should’ve come over’ has been omitted, perhaps down to Jamie Cullum murdering it earlier). ‘Yard of Blonde Girls’ is adopted by Country/Bluegrass giving the lyrics a less tortured sense, which works well. But band of the moment, The Magic Numbers, add little to ‘Sing A Song For You’. Standing out is the femininity of Kathryn Williams on ‘Buzzin’ Fly’ but of course remains no match for the original, which always leaves a problem. There is not enough here to keep a Buckley fan interested and neither suffices to make a novice want to find out more. Despite a gaggle of interesting new artists, the lack of a defined audience eventually results in its aim being lost.

Mike Relm - Spectacles

Let the face furniture of San Fran disco-er Mike Relm fool you. Forget that he’s named his second album after his eyewear.

Vivian Girls

Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls

One of Vivian Girls is called Kickball Katy. She plays bass even more nonchalantly than your average Valium-scoffing four-stringer.

Plastic Passion - Contrived Imagery

They're saying that punk's dead, y'know? Spiritually, if not physically.

Wetdog - Enterprise Reversal

Had ‘Enterprise Reversal’ been a five track EP of a release its toneless blahs from lead shouter Rivka Gillieron would have still been a struggle to sit through.
