< My Morning Jacket
Evil Urges
words by Matt Warwick

Whoa there, horsey. Epic country cowboys MMJ have gone a bit MGMT on our asses. No wonder, perhaps, as a lot of their fifth studio album was recorded in New York, while they looked to a totally different environment for inspiration. ‘Highly Suspicious’, then, is an ambitious Talking Heads-style funk-out as the Jacket take their six-shooters and chaps to the city, injecting their original schtick with the crystal meth and rotting vomit from the toilets of CBGB, to come up with stuff like the mega country-soul of ‘I’m Amazed’.

Mike Relm - Spectacles

Let the face furniture of San Fran disco-er Mike Relm fool you. Forget that he’s named his second album after his eyewear.

Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls

One of Vivian Girls is called Kickball Katy. She plays bass even more nonchalantly than your average Valium-scoffing four-stringer.

Plastic Passion - Contrived Imagery

They're saying that punk's dead, y'know? Spiritually, if not physically.

Wetdog - Enterprise Reversal

Had ‘Enterprise Reversal’ been a five track EP of a release its toneless blahs from lead shouter Rivka Gillieron would have still been a struggle to sit through.
