Born Ruffians EP
words by Emma Edmondson

There’s something going on in Canada at the moment and it’s nothing to do with mounties or huskies. It’s the music. Recently everything coming out of this not quite American country is putting our homegrown talent to shame. And these guys are no different. Think of curdling cat like vocals with a Lou Reed agenda. Cover this with jerky guitars, kitsch handclaps every so often and tadaaa you have Born Ruffians. Their music may sound more like band practice rather than a studio release, but that’s why it’s raw. No big name producers. No mountains of cash behind it. Just dignified greatness. Nuff said.

Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls

Wetdog - Enterprise Reversal

Had ‘Enterprise Reversal’ been a five track EP of a release its toneless blahs from lead shouter Rivka Gillieron would have still been a struggle to sit through.
