< We Are Scientists at Shepherd's Bush Empire
words by Ross McTaggart
WAS are decent enough but if they didn’t have that NY cool thing going on this gig would either be in a much smaller venue or perhaps not happening at all. Tracks from the new album lack that jerky groove that made ‘With Love and Squalor’ such a hit and the biggest cheer tonight is saved for their foolproof finisher, ‘The Great Escape’.
As the dance floor finally explodes you remember why you liked these guys in the first place, but the thrill of one song only goes to show how much filler came before it - it’s style before substance and the Scientists are a season out.
The average crowd age is about 35 and as a group of ladies who look like they’re on a hen night go by, the feeling that We Are Scientists are just an American version of the Kaiser Chiefs sadly begins to sink in.
