< Elle S'Appelle at Oh! Bar
words by Matthias Scherer

Boy/girl vocals are all the rage. Just ask Slow Club, Winterkids or Blood Red Shoes. Liverpudlian trio Elle S’Appelle may share that particular trait with the mentioned bands, but the similarities stop there. Ignoring the simplistic approach of their peers, Andy Donovan (vocals, bass), Lucy Blakeley (vocals, keyboards) and Owen Cox (drums) go for playful arena-fillers in the vein of Dresden Dolls.

Lucy is the object of many adoring gazes and less subtle remarks, but works her keyboard effortlessly, producing both electric guitar sounds and more conventional synth lines while Andy’s declamatory vocals add a Queen-like element to what could easily be used as the soundtrack to a sugar-fuelled afternoon at Chessington World of Adventures.

‘Monkeyshine’, a sunny, smiley gem of a song closes a set that will have done nothing to stem the trend of opposite sexes dueting.
