words by Margo Fortuny
Doll-faced songstress Ida No daintily kicks off her heels. Johnny, with his collar popped, outfitted like a Brooklynite from 1981, joins her. Portland duo Glass Candy have arrived. Beginning with ‘Digital Versicolor’, the sound consists of Ida’s saucy vocals, meows, and howls atop clean stylized beats.
Each track is joyous dancefloor fodder. The crowd claps and squirms in electro rapture. Johnny bites into an apple, plays the synth, and busts moves all at the same time. Ida keeps crooning and dancing interpretively.
She pulls boys onstage and starts to sing ‘Miss Broadway’, a cappella, while Johnny fires up some warm Italo-disco beats. Ecstatic, they shimmy and pop with her. With the apples, foaming champagne, kicked-off shoes, and kids throwing shapes it’s like a living room dance party. ‘The Good Time Girl’ and ‘Beatmaster’ keep on engaging the fans with their fluid moves and vintage style dance music. Tonight, everyone here is in love.
