Cast your mind back to 1999 – the charts were full of Eminem, Limp Bizkit and B*Witched. At the time a young producer and session musician from Surrey was writing his debut album. Jon Hopkins announced his arrival with the beautiful ‘Opalescent’ in 2001. In the years after that he’d go on to collaborate with King Creosote (on ‘Diamond Mine’, their 2011 Mercury nominated album), the legendary Brian Eno and, later, produce Coldplay. Last year he scored the Barbican’s critically acclaimed production ofHamlet, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch. ‘Immunity’, his fourth solo album in 2013, was his most notable release to date. He’s working on the follow-up right now in his east London studio.

In episode 10 of Midnight Chats, Jon talks to me about his recent US road trip, his memories of the making of ‘Opalescent’, his friendship with Brian Eno, his practising of transcendental meditation, London’s struggling clubbing scene and gives an update on his forthcoming new music.
